Just a reminder that our AKCHO Annual Meeting is taking place on Tuesday, January 29, at the new Nordic Museum, 2655 NW Market Street, Seattle. Doors open at 10 AM; the gathering will be called to order at 10:30 AM and will include a short business meeting, a panel presentation, and luncheon ending by 1:00 PM.

The topic inclusion was selected because AKCHO believes that inclusivity is vital to the existence of every heritage organization. Please join us and historical organizations across King County as we look internally to examine our policies and practices and learn from one another’s best practices to create a more inclusive community. Our panel will be moderated AKCHO Trustee Hilary Pittenger with panelists: Chieko Phillips – 4Culture, Nicole Robert – MOHAI and Aletheia Wittman – The Incluseum.

AKCHO’s monthly membership meetings will resume in the fall – please circle these dates: September 27, October 25 and November 29. 

AKCHO Programs Chair Miguel Llanos has scheduled our October 25 meeting in Burien at the Pacific Northwest Railroad Archive, which will share the process behind their just-completed Digital Archive Plan. But the September and November venues and topics are still to be determined. If you have a proposal, please contact miguel.llanos@outlook.com

Program: The Sounds of History

It’s not just words and pictures that help preserve history. Sounds can add incredible depth to that storytelling, and the nonprofit Jack Straw Cultural Center has been doing just that in the Seattle area since 1962. The 2014 winner of AKCHO’s technology award will host our November membership meeting, with Executive Director Joan Rabinowitz sharing its use of radio, podcasts and audio guides to record the histories of local artists, community groups and heritage societies. Recording the 50^th anniversary of the 1962 World’s Fair, digitizing a 1970 KRAB radio series on Seattle’s history, and producing an oral history of Lake Union and Portage Bay are a few of the group’s contributions over five decades.

An exhibit titled “Extraordinary Ordinary People: American Masters of Traditional Arts” will be on display as well for members to visit.
