  Black Diamond Labor Day celebration

  MOHAI at Youngershoot
The Youngershoot Kids Zone will be ready for play throughout the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival, and MOHAI will be hosting a Century 21 Scavenger Hunt that will help your family explore history around the Seattle Center Campus. Entrance is FREE with admittance to the festival. Once on the Seattle Center grounds, you'll find MOHAI at the Next 50 Plaza.

  Century 21 Walking Tour - guided tour of the Seattle Center
Experience the cultural, architectural and historical legacies of Seattle’s 1962 World’s Fair, known as Century 21, on a 90-minute walking tour of the Seattle Center Campus. Tours are led by expert guides from MOHAI and the Seattle Architecture Foundation and meet in front of the International Fountain Pavilion (formerly the Northwest Craft Center). Tours will be offered April 26 – October 20 every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 10 a.m. and every 1st and 3rd Saturday at 11 a.m. (except Labor Day weekend).   MOHAI Neighborhood History Tour - There Goes the Gayborhood
Guided by the Museum of History & Industry's Curt Fischer, discover how Capitol Hill supplanted Pioneer Square as the most visible place where the LGBTQ community gained ground beginning in the 1970s and on into the present. Advance registration recommended. Cost MOHAI members $15, general public $20. (Day-of tickets subject to availability and additional $5 charge.) Meet at the fountain in Cal Anderson Park, 1635 11th Avenue (near the intersection of Broadway and Howell) on Seattle's Capitol Hill.

  Dedication ceremony at Saar Pioneer Cemetery
The ceremony will include dedication of the Civil War veterans' replacement markers, new markers for nine other people laid to rest in the Cemetery (including Margaret Saar), an unmarked graves monument, a City of Kent Landmark plaque, and an E Clampus Vitus historical name plaque. The ceremony is open to the public. Saar Pioneer Cemetery is located at S 212th Street and Highway 167 in Kent. For more information call 253-631-0630.

  MOHAI Boat Tour - Seattle Lakes
Museum of History & Industry historian Dr. Lorraine McConaghy will guide you on a historic look at Lake Washington and Lake Union while you enjoy the ride aboard Argosy's Sightseer cruise boat.   Redmond Historical Society meeting - History of Coal Mining
Redmond Historical Society will meet at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80 Street, Redmond, WA. Steven Williams will be presenting a "History of Coal Mining." He focuses on 100 years of local coal mining. In 1888 there were 20 mules and 200 men employed here. Exporting coal to San Francisco turned Seattle into a dominant seaport. Learn what is underneath a mountain that is older than Rainier. The program is made possible by Eastside Heritage Center. More information at www.redmondhistoricalsociety.org.

Restored by the Historical Society of Federal Way, the historic Denny and Barker Cabins are open to the public on the second Saturday of every month throughout the summer. Come visit the cabins and then enjoy a walk through West Hylebos Wetlands Park.

  Old Redmond Historic Walking Tour
Redmond’s Centennial year is here. Take our guided walking tour of the historic downtown core. It is guaranteed to provide facts, figures, and fun, since historian Tom Hitzroth will be the man with the stories, gossip, and names. Did you know in whose building an alleged bordello operated? Hint: He would later become Redmond’s longest serving mayor! Tom is expanding his guide services in honor of the Centennial, offering five downtown tours this year: May 6, May 20, June 3, June 17, and September 9. Tours run from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., beginning on the front steps of the Justice White House, 7730 Leary Way NE., at the west end of Redmond Town Center where the Saturday Market is held. A tour will not be held if it rains. He is also doing a tour of the Redmond Cemetery on July 15 and one of our haunted history on September 30. The starting place for these two has not yet been determined. Registration is required by the Thursday before the tour. A fee of $8 per person will help fund Society research.   2012 Washington State Jewish Historical Society Annual Meeting
Please join with us for a wonderful production of Book-it Theater's "A Future Remembered: The 1962 World's Fair and Its Legacy," a historical performance about the 1962 World's Fair Century 21, adapted and directed by Annie Lareau from the book by Paula Becker and Alan Stein, with support from 4Culture.   The Art of Reading a Sami Wooden Cup
Troy Storfjell, a Sami scholar and associate professor at Pacific Lutheran University, will show how Sami wooden vessels reveal more than first meets the eye. This talk is being given in conjunction with the "Eight Seasons in Sapmi, the Land of the Sami People" exhibit currently on display at the Nordic Heritage Museum. suggested donation $5, RSVPs encouraged.   The Future Remembered: Kirkland Heritage Society
A theatrical adaptation of the book of the same name that was written by Paula Becker, Alan J. Stein and the HistoryLink staff.   Smithsonian Free Museum Day
Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Media in which participating museums across the country open their doors for free to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Among the AKCHO members participating: the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum, the Log House Museum, the Museum of History & Industry at the International Fountain Pavilion, the Nordic Heritage Museum, the Renton History Museum, The Center for Wooden Baots, and the Museum of Flight.   National History Day workshop
National History Day in Washington State, a program of the Washington State Historical Society, is joining University of Washington Libraries in sponsoring the workshop on Saturday, 29 September, in the Suzzallo and Allen Libraries at the University of Washington. The workshop is free to participating teachers, librarians and administrators and includes three clock hours and teaching materials. Participants may register using the form at catalyst.uw.edu.

  Museum of Flight Symposium - Celebrating the B-52
In honor of the B-52 bomber's 60th birthday, Stratofortress engineers, pilots, crew members and historians will present lectures and discussions about the long-lived bomber's role in war and peace. Conditions permitting, a B-52G will visit the Museum with limited availability for tours. Saturday events include panel programs with former and current flight crew members and a B-52 test pilot. Some of the flight crew members will talk about their experiences in Operation Linebacker II during the Vietnam War. Sunday events include a panel discussion and book signing with author Col. Jim Hoopaw, author of "Tall Tail Tales" and "Where the Buf Fellows Roamed." Hooppaw is a retired US Air Force pilot with 26 years experience in the Strategic Air Command. He flew the B-47E and B-52C, D, E, F, G and H models, and served as a pilot, instructor, Squadron Commander, and Bomb Wing Deputy Commander of Operations. Hoopaw also completed three tours during Vietnam War's Operation Arc Light. All symposium programs are free with admission to the Museum. www.museumofflight.org

Relive the days of the old West outlaws with “Gentleman Desperado” a new interactive theater experience by Keri Healey. The event, sponsored by 4culture’s site specific projects, takes us back to 1902 when the Olson family was held hostage by the notorious outlaw Harry Tracy. The experience takes place in vignettes throughout the Farm, allowing guests to flow at their own pace; listening, watching and interacting with all the outlaw action!
