AKCHO’s Inspiring Slate of Programs for 2010

In addition to our March 30 meeting, which will be hosted by the Kirkland Heritage Society at the Kirkland Heritage Hall (click here for details), we are pleased to offer our members a diverse and informative slate of programs for 2010. Please plan to come to as many as you can to meet, learn from, and be inspired by one another. Read on for descriptions of upcoming meetings.

AKCHO Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception
April 27, 6-8:30pm
MOHAI

The annual awards celebration acknowledges excellence and commitment to King County’s history and those special people, programs, or projects that have made a significant contribution. Awards are given in the categories of long term projects, single impact events, exhibits, youth contributions and heritage education. Named awards recognize heritage advocacy, an outstanding historical publication and exceptional individual leadership by a volunteer or paid staff. Additionally, 4Culture will present its fourth annual “Golden Rain Globe” Heritage Tourism Award.

Stimson Green Mansion, a Seattle Landmark

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation will host the AKCHO meeting at the historic Stimson Green Mansion their statewide headquarters. The program will feature their Barns programs and much more, and a tour of the Mansion.

South Lake Union Park, Seattle Washington
We will have a special Maritime AKCHO meeting. Note the weekend meeting time. We welcome everyone to hear the many Maritime plans and projects that are happening. The Center for Wooden Boats, MOHAI, Historic Seattle, the Virginia V and NW Seaports will bring us up to date on all the maritime action and the many important plans that are in the works. Don’t miss out on this special meeting that will be packed with information and fun, since we’ll actually get on board a boat and be right at the water’s edge.

The Bellevue Strawberry Festival is presented by the Eastside Heritage Center. More details to come.

Annual AKCHO Picnic
Northwest Railway Museum
Saturday, September 12,
The Historic Depot, Snoqualmie
The annual AKCHO picnic will be hosted by the Northwest Railway Museum. Folks are still talking about the last time they hosted AKCHO. There will be trains and an opportunity to see and hear about all the exciting projects at the Northwest Railway Museum.

October AKCHO program/membership meeting

Wing Luke Asian Museum 719 South King Street, Seattle
The Wing Luke Asian Museum will host the AKCHO meeting at their new museum, where they meet their mission is to connect everyone to the rich history, dynamic cultures and art of Asian Pacific Americans through vivid storytelling and inspiring experiences. It was a gigantic project to create this important new space for the Museum, now a Smithsonian Affiliate. See and hear about the development of this museum and tour the resulting spaces.

November AKCHO program/membership meeting
November 30, 9:30 – 11:30am
Washington Hall, a project of Historic Seattle and a Seattle Landmark
153 14th Ave, Seattle
Historic Seattle will host the AKCHO meeting at Washington Hall, where they are rehabilitating this Seattle Landmark to continue its rich history of community use. Built and used originally by the Danish Brotherhood, it later was home to a Masonic Lodge and a home for On The Boards and now it is owned by Historic Seattle. We will hear about the history of the building and our tour will illustrate the many challenges and joys of historic preservation.

Heritage Advisor is published 10 times a year by the Association of King County Historical Organizations as a service to members and those who support its mission. AKCHO was established in 1977 to: encourage cooperation among historical organizations; promote and encourage the study and preservation of the history and heritage of King County through member organizations, individual members, and the community they serve; and support such preservation efforts through public awareness and understanding of legislative issues.

The Heritage Advisor welcomes submissions of news items, calendar items, and opinion columns from AKCHO members, HA subscribers, and readers. Articles are limited to 300 words and they should have a strong relevance to historic preservation and heritage issues in King County, Washington. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. AKCHO does not pay for published submissions. All articles are subject to review by AKCHO staff. Please send your article within the body of an email (no attachments, please) to heritageadvisor@akcho.org.

AKCHO welcomes new members year round. Individual memberships are $15. Organization memberships are $35.
