June membership meeting – capturing community memories

Two dozen AKCHO members gathered at the landmarked Fall City Masonic Hall late last month to learn how Memory Books can assist historical societies in capturing community memories.

Cathy Fulton of Capturing Memories and Pat Filer of HistoryLink.org both discussed how a project they collaborated on several years ago for the Log House Museum led to their creation of a template that can be used by other history museums and historical societies. Read the rest of this article »



Shuttle trainer arrives aboard Super Guppy

After years of preparation and anticipation, the Museum of Flight welcomed the 28-foot-long crew cabin section of NASA’s full-scale space shuttle trainer on June 30. The Space Shuttle Trainer is the simulator on which every space shuttle astronaut has ever trained. Museum of Flight President and CEO Doug King was joined by Gov. Christine Gregoire, Congressman Jim McDermott, astronaut Bonnie Dunbar and other local dignitaries to welcome its arrival. Read the rest of this article »



Reard House moves down the road

After more than two years of heavy-duty advocacy, fundraising, and planning undertaken by the Sammamish Heritage Society, the historic Reard House last month was moved approximately a mile from its old location on the Sammamish Plateau to its new permanent location at the new Southeast Eighth Street Park. Boats galore at CWB’s 36th annual fest

The Center for Wooden Boats’ 36th annual Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival expands to five days this year and festivities will span Lake Union from south to north. Honoring its floating roots, the Festival will feature an array of 200 wooden boats anchored off of Lake Union Park, ranging from dinghies to the 133-foot schooner Adventuress. Heritage Advisor is published 10 times a year by the Association of King County Historical Organizations as a service to members and those who support its mission. AKCHO was established in 1977 to: encourage cooperation among historical organizations; promote and encourage the study and preservation of the history and heritage of King County through member organizations, individual members, and the community they serve; and support such preservation efforts through public awareness and understanding of legislative issues.

The Heritage Advisor welcomes submissions of news items, calendar items, and opinion columns from AKCHO members, HA subscribers, and readers. Articles are limited to 300 words and they should have a strong relevance to historic preservation and heritage issues in King County, Washington. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. AKCHO does not pay for published submissions. All articles are subject to review by AKCHO staff. Please send your article within the body of an email (no attachments, please) to heritageadvisor@akcho.org.

AKCHO welcomes new members year round. Individual memberships are $15. Organization memberships are $35.
