MOHAI bids farewell to Montlake

Thursday, June 7, will be the last day visitors will be able to visit the Museum of History & Industry at its longtime Montlake location. The facility has been slated for demolition due to expansion of Highway 520. To celebrate decades of memories at the site, MOHAI is offering free admission the evening of Wednesday, June 6, from 5-8 PM, and all day on Thursday, June 7. Read the rest of this article »



Triumph in Sammamish – Reard House saved

Dedicated Sammamish Heritage Society volunteers have found a permanent new home for the historic Jacob and Emma Reard House, formerly known as the Freed House. Built in the 1890s, the oldest remaining house in Sammamish was at one time slated for a fire burn exercise or demolishment. But in less than three years, the Sammamish Heritage Society has raised over $80,000 from fundraising and grants to relocate and preserve the structure. Read the rest of this article »



Wellspring Family Services history project

WellspringDuring 2012, Wellspring Family Services, a private not-for-profit organization, is celebrating 120 years of service to families and children in Seattle and King County. As part of our celebration we are putting our own archives into order and researching and publishing stories about our history.  Some of these stories already appear on HistoryLink and on our own website, www.wellspringfs.org/120. More will appear throughout the year.

Story themes include the history of social work as a profession, especially our relationship to the UW School of Social Work; the changing face of families and family counseling; our connections with the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, United Way, and other civic institutions; race relations seen through the social service lens; and our agency’s response to specific communities in specific circumstances, such as Japanese-Americans returning after internment during World War II. Celebrating SE Seattle’s history

Heritage Advisor is published 10 times a year by the Association of King County Historical Organizations as a service to members and those who support its mission. AKCHO was established in 1977 to: encourage cooperation among historical organizations; promote and encourage the study and preservation of the history and heritage of King County through member organizations, individual members, and the community they serve; and support such preservation efforts through public awareness and understanding of legislative issues.

The Heritage Advisor welcomes submissions of news items, calendar items, and opinion columns from AKCHO members, HA subscribers, and readers. Articles are limited to 300 words and they should have a strong relevance to historic preservation and heritage issues in King County, Washington. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. AKCHO does not pay for published submissions. All articles are subject to review by AKCHO staff. Please send your article within the body of an email (no attachments, please) to heritageadvisor@akcho.org.

AKCHO welcomes new members year round. Individual memberships are $15. Organization memberships are $35.
