Arson claims historic Skykomish tavern
The historic Whistling Post Tavern, in continuous operation in Skykomish since 1903, succumbed to an arsonist’s fire on April 10. The structure was one of 11 historic landmark buildings in the small town, and contained many historic photographs and local memorabilia. The Monroe Monitor reports that the fire was thought to have been started to cover up the burglary of an ATM on the property. Read the rest of this article »
North Lake Union site opens
The Center for Wooden Boats formally opens the new CWB North Lake Union Workshop & Warehouse on Friday, May 4, 5:30 PM. This former Metro site will be used to repair and restore historic boats. Read the rest of this article »
Historic Denny cabin restored
 Forty-six years after a cabin built by Seattle pioneer David T. Denny was saved from the wrecking ball in a developing Queen Anne neighborhood and removed to Federal Way, the cabin has been carefully restored and is opening for public tours. On May 12, the Historical Society of Federal Way is celebrating the restoration with a ribbon-cutting and other festivities from noon to 4 PM. Read the rest of this article »

Historic theatres library now open
The Seattle Theatre Group has officially opened its Historic Theatres Library to the public. Located in the Paramount Theatre’s Office Tower adjacent to the theatre, the library includes over 100 years of historical data on the performers that graced the states of the Paramount, Moore, and Neptune theatres, the visionaries responsible for those theatres, memorabilia and signed posters. Black Diamond combines celebrations in June
Historically, all of the SE King County coal mining towns had an ethnic pecking order, and in Black Diamond, the Welsh were at the top of the heap. Given their centuries-old tradition of coal mining, the Welsh brought their expertise with them to America; the town of Black Diamond was founded by Welshmen representing the California-based Black Diamond Coal Company. Heritage Advisor is published 10 times a year by the Association of King County Historical Organizations as a service to members and those who support its mission. AKCHO was established in 1977 to: encourage cooperation among historical organizations; promote and encourage the study and preservation of the history and heritage of King County through member organizations, individual members, and the community they serve; and support such preservation efforts through public awareness and understanding of legislative issues.
The Heritage Advisor welcomes submissions of news items, calendar items, and opinion columns from AKCHO members, HA subscribers, and readers. Articles are limited to 300 words and they should have a strong relevance to historic preservation and heritage issues in King County, Washington. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. AKCHO does not pay for published submissions. All articles are subject to review by AKCHO staff. Please send your article within the body of an email (no attachments, please) to heritageadvisor@akcho.org.
