Dorpat to be honored at AKCHO annual awards

Paul Dorpat then

Paul Dorpat – author, filmmaker, curator, lecturer, and regional historian – will  be presented with the AKCHO Board Legacy Award at the upcoming AKCHO Annual Awards program on April 24 at the Museum of History & Industry. The Board selected Dorpat for this singular honor for his far-ranging, long-term, and outstanding contributions to local history.

Perhaps best known for his “Now and Then” columns that have appeared in The Sunday Seattle Times’ Pacific Northwest Magazine for the past 30 years, Dorpat has authored or co-authored several books, including Building Washington, A History of Washington Public Works; The University Book Store Centennial Pictorial; Seattle Waterfront, An Illustrated History; and Legacy, The Kreielsheimer Foundation. He also was involved with the creation of HistoryLink.org, the online encyclopedia of Washington State history. Read the rest of this article »



Planning for a changing landscape

More than two dozen AKCHO members came to the Renton History Museum for AKCHO’s March membership meeting, where Museum director Elizabeth Stewart gave a presentation on “Planning for a Changing Landscape.” In discussing the process the Museum went through in developing a new master plan, Stewart counseled that while it may seem counterintuitive, bad economic times are actually a good time to look at an institution’s traditional assumptions and think about how to do things better. King Co Council passes Pacific Raceways ordinance

On March 19, in a 7-2 vote, the King County Council voted to approve the controversial Ordinance #2011-0227.2, which allows Pacific Raceways to begin the process of a massive expansion of its racing facility located in the officially-designated Rural Area of King County near Auburn. Heritage Advisor is published 10 times a year by the Association of King County Historical Organizations as a service to members and those who support its mission. AKCHO was established in 1977 to: encourage cooperation among historical organizations; promote and encourage the study and preservation of the history and heritage of King County through member organizations, individual members, and the community they serve; and support such preservation efforts through public awareness and understanding of legislative issues.

The Heritage Advisor welcomes submissions of news items, calendar items, and opinion columns from AKCHO members, HA subscribers, and readers. Articles are limited to 300 words and they should have a strong relevance to historic preservation and heritage issues in King County, Washington. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. AKCHO does not pay for published submissions. All articles are subject to review by AKCHO staff. Please send your article within the body of an email (no attachments, please) to heritageadvisor@akcho.org.

AKCHO welcomes new members year round. Individual memberships are $15. Organization memberships are $35.
