Your chance to comment on County’s comprehensive plan

King County is currently taking public comments on proposed updates to the King County Comprehensive Plan.  This plan has a great deal of potential impact on the future of historic properties in King County, and on how the organizations that safeguard historic and cultural resources relate to county government.  The plan is undergoing a great deal of revision, with sections being lined out and re-written to make the wording more concise. November AKCHO meeting recap

AKCHO members assembled in the beautiful Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center on November 29 to hear a presentation by Judy Bentley.  Author of “Hiking Washington’s History,” as well as a local walking tour guide for the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, Bentley stressed how the best heritage trails and historic sites invoke a resonance with the past.  Using a rich collection of photographs she has taken around the state, she “walked us through” some examples, from Maya Lin’s internationally-renowned Confluence Project along the Columbia to culturally modified trees that were used generations ago by Native Americans for basket-making (and that still can be spotted deep in forests today if one knows where and how to look for them). County’s 2012 budget funds HPP

The Metropolitan King County Council approved the 2012 King County Budget last month – unanimously and ahead of schedule.  Again this year, County Executive Dow Constantine proposed allocating 100% of the 2012 document recording fee revenue to King County’s Historic Preservation Program (HPP).  This will bring three HPP staff members back to full-time status. Heritage Advisor is published 10 times a year by the Association of King County Historical Organizations as a service to members and those who support its mission. AKCHO was established in 1977 to: encourage cooperation among historical organizations; promote and encourage the study and preservation of the history and heritage of King County through member organizations, individual members, and the community they serve; and support such preservation efforts through public awareness and understanding of legislative issues.

The Heritage Advisor welcomes submissions of news items, calendar items, and opinion columns from AKCHO members, HA subscribers, and readers. Articles are limited to 300 words and they should have a strong relevance to historic preservation and heritage issues in King County, Washington. Submission of an article does not guarantee publication. AKCHO does not pay for published submissions. All articles are subject to review by AKCHO staff. Please send your article within the body of an email (no attachments, please) to heritageadvisor@akcho.org.

AKCHO welcomes new members year round. Individual memberships are $15. Organization memberships are $35.
